Fashion, art, and literature, then and now.
Eighteenth-century tastes in fashion and art tended toward the formal and the artificial. Even a brief look at the favored attire of the aristocratic classes of Restoration England, with their powdered wigs, satin breeches, and high-heeled shoes, will reveal their taste for artful elaboration. In literature too, eighteenth-century taste-makers encouraged the use of strict forms and classical unities rather than spontaneity or naturalness. How do these eighteenth-century tastes compare with today's trends in fashion, art, and literature? Give some examples from both eras, and discuss how standards of taste have changed or remained the same. Responses will vary in length, but they must be no less than four sentences.Proper grammar, spelling, and mechanics are crucial. Due: Friday, April 11 by 11:59 PM CST In Act II, Scene iii, when Duncan's corpse is discovered, Macbeth utters what sounds like a hypocritical lament beginning, "Had I but died..." (85). Is his lament really hypocritical? The critic A.C. Bradley argues that, although the speech is meant to be a lie [hypocritical], it actually contains, "Macbeth's profoundest feelings."
In one paragraph (5-8 sentences), analyze Macbeth's internal conflict--what is he battling on the inside? How does Macbeth feel about having murdered Duncan? Remember that proper spelling, grammar, and mechanics are crucial to a perfect score. Due: Friday, April 4 by 11:59 PM CST. |
